Keyword Planner allows you to perform a number of different tasks:

1. Search for new keyword and ad group ideas. This option allows you to find new keywords based on a seed keyword, website or your niche.

2. Get search volume for a list of keywords or group them into ad groups. This is a useful tool if you already have a list of keywords and want to find out how many people search for them on average.

3. Get traffic forecasts for a list of keywords. This feature only applies to Adwords advertisers allowing them to assess traffic forecasts for a given keyword. In reality, this option isn’t useful for SEO.

4. Multiply keywords lists to get new keyword ideas. The last tool allows you to mashup different key terms to identify relevant keywords.

While we’re on the topic of SEO, I wanted to mention Ahrefs. Ahrefs is a tool that allows you to do keyword research to ensure you’re targeting the best keywords with the highest traffic and lowest difficulty to rank for.
While this tool isn’t free or cheap, they do offer a free two-week trial. Alternatively, you can use their competitors like Moz or SEMrush (who also have free trials, hint hint). Whichever one you choose, if you’re serious about ranking on Google, I highly recommend a keyword research tool. Without them, you only have access to Google Keyword Planner, which doesn’t really help you find the right keywords.
